Earthquakes cause structures to have lateral displacement subjected to the lateral loads. One of the effective methods for controlling the vibration of structures subjected to the earthquake is use of a modified tuned liquid damper (MTLD). In this paper, the effect of linear and nonlinear behavior of structures and also the effect of strain hardening ratio on efficiency of the MTLD in reducing the structural vibration of a single-degree-of-freedom system is investigated. Firstly, using Gray Wolf Optimization algorithm, the optimal values are calculated for the MTLD for a structure with linear behavior. Results show that the designed MTLD cannot control the structure when behavior of the structure changes from linear to nonlinear. Then, the optimal values for the MTLD are calculated for the nonlinear structure. Results show that the linear structure controlled with MTLD reduces the maximum displacement of the structure by 14.47% but for the nonlinear controlled structure, this value decreases by 7.47%. This indicates that MTLD has a better performance in control of structures with linear behavior.
