Abstract

Pavement skid resistance has been recognized as one of the major factors in safety of intersections. Sufficient skid resistance helps vehicle drivers to stop their vehicle in shortest distance and avoid possible accidents. Asphalt mixture characteristics are among the most important factors in skid resistance. The main objective of this article is to investigate the influence of asphalt mixture elements on safety of urban unsignalized intersections. In this regard, ten un-signalized intersections selected in different parts of Tehran. Then pavement core samples were taken for extraction test and traffic accidents statistics were collected. The friction coefficient of pavement was measured at each intersection using a tractive friction device. Based on the data analysis three regression model were developed and validated. The models show a decreasing effect of aggregates fracture and coarse grain percentages and increasing effect of bitumen. Therefore the result show that at the intersection safety could improve significantly by adjusting asphalt mix elements.
