Abstract

In the last few years, application of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) as an alternative for natural aggregates has increased. Due to the different structure of RCA compared to NA, recycled aggregate concretes (RAC) have inferior performance in terms of mechanical properties and durability compare to conventional concrete. One way to improve the quality and performance of RAC is using SCMs such as zeolite as a partial replacement of cement. In this research, 8 concrete mixes were considered in which RCA replaced natural aggregate at 30, 50 and 100% replacement levels. Also for improving the quality of RAC, 15% of Portland cement was replaced with zeolite. Several tests including water absorption, specific weight, compressive strength, splitting tensile, and deicer salt scaling resistance were performed on concrete specimens. The results showed that inclusion of zeolite improved the performance of RAC, such that concrete which incorporated 30% RCA and 15% zeolite had a similar performance to the reference mix. However, as for the deicer salt scaling resistance, all mixes containing 15% zeolite did not have an acceptable performance.
