ABSTRACT
In this study, the effect of using nanocarbon fiber as a bitumen modifier on the moisture sensitivity of asphalt mixtures has been investigated by considering the mechanism of its effect on the adhesion between bitumen and aggregate. In order to investigate moisture damage, indirect tensile strength test was used on samples made with two types of aggregates: limestone and granite. To simulate environmental conditions, samples of asphalt mixtures are subjected to 1, 3 and 5 ice-melting cycles.
The results of mechanical tests show that the use of nanofiber carbon (CNF) increases the ITS values and the indirect tensile strength ratio in both types of aggregates and thus reduces the severity of the expulsion event in the modified samples. Also, the use of 0.2% nanocarbon fiber has the best effect in increasing the resistance of asphalt mix to moisture damage.
