Active control systems, employ proportional forces based on structural response and external energy source, to amend detrimental responses. Sensors are used to monitor the excitation signal and response of the structure and signals are processed via computer. Identifying stimulus acceleration and structural responses at each time instance, actuators exert control forces on the structure.
Generally active control systems are effective in regulating structural response. In this paper an active viscous damper is employed in a blast loaded structure to assess the efficiency of active control in rapid strain rates. Thus, a computer code for time history analysis is developed in MATLAB computational software because of its' useful features facilitating numerical simulations. The code is written based on the Newmark–Beta average constant acceleration method and is able to analyze structures with arbitrary degrees of freedom. It can calculate and exert required control forces using linear optimal control method.
Verification process is carried out under earthquake excitation based on authentic references. Final results show that active viscous damper reduces structural responses up to 50 percent in earthquake loads while the reduction is limited to 20 percent in blast loads. Thus, using active control systems in rapid strain rates needs special considerations due to time delay effect.
