The acute shortage or lack of frictional fill in some parts of the world has led to the use of in-situ inferior soils in reinforced soil structures. A potential solution for making use of marginal soils is consisting of encapsulating the reinforcement in thin granular layers. Previous studies revealed that encapsulating geogrid in thin layers of sand under pullout conditions enhances the pull out resistance of reinforced soil. This paper presents the results of 25 large scale load tests aimed at studying the interaction of soils reinforced with geogrid embedded in thin layers of granular soil of different grain sizes and its effect on the bearing capacity of ring foundation. The results of examinations have been shown that modification of material and soil reinforcing increase bearing capacity of ring Foundation about 2 times more than unreinforced. On the other hand, the modified materials whit particle size between 2.36 to 4.75 have performed the most effect on increasing bearing capacity. Additionally, a novel relation has been proposed for predicting the ultimate load capacity of the ring foundation resting on reinforced soil.
