Due to the uncertainty in the characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) structures as well as the loads on them, it is necessary to optimize their design based on reliability analysis. In this paper, a new reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) method is presented based on the performance measure approach (PMA) and particle swarm algorithm (PSA). The objective function of the optimization problem is to minimize the weight or construction cost under deterministic and probabilistic constraints. Deterministic constraints include the code rules of strength and serviceability. Probabilistic constraints guarantee a minimum reliability index. In the proposed method, PSA is used to solve the optimization problem and PMA is used to control the probabilistic constraint. The proposed method is validated by the results of another research in the field of RBDO. The results of the analysis on a case study showed that in comparison with the reliability index approach (RIA) and genetic algorithm (GA), the method proposed in this paper has reduced the analysis time from 10 hours to about half an hour, indicating the proper performance of the proposed method.
