Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connection is one of the prequalified connections in the American Steel Connections Design code (AISC-358), which, while preventing stress concentration in vicinity of the column, also satisfies a strong column - weak beam design philosophy to prevent the increase of the column size in the Steel Plate Shear wall (SPSW) system. When the web plate yields at the steel shear wall, it imposes large forces on boundary elements. The design of beams and columns for the these forces leads to heavy steel beams and columns. Therefore, an RBS connection with local weakening of the beam and reducing the required column capacity leads to a more dynamic stability. In this paper Short-frames with 1, 3 and 5 stories with steel shear wall designed with two different beam to column connections named as MRF (Moment Resistance Frame) and RBS. Nonlinear Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) employed to monitor the behavior of Short-frames under far and near-field earthquakes. The results of analyzes indicates that the use of RBS connections generally leads to improvement of seismic behavior of SPSW system. In addition, the probability of failure of RBS models, regarding the performance, in less than MRF models.
