The study of arching as the transfer of pressure or the formation of an arch-shaped zone in materials is consistently one of the concepts discussed in geotechnical engineering. Arching takes place as a result of the mobilization of shear strength due to the frictional interaction among the grains when a part of the medium particles is moving relative to others. The trapdoor test is a common approach to investigate arching characteristics. Due to the lack of theoretical solutions for accurate prediction of the geometric properties of the arch region, in the current study, an analytical model is proposed to capture the formation of a stress-free surface in noncohesive particles such as dry gravel and sand. The research is based on establishing the mathematical relations governing the problem and solving the system of the partial differential equations. The proposed solutions are a function of the internal friction angle of grains, the inclination angle of the base plate and the angle of the stagnant mass inside the test box. The analytical formulas are efficiently used for the estimation of the geometric shape of a stable arch. Finally, the outputs of the proposed solutions are validated according to the results of some experimental studies.
