This paper studies the wind effect over the hexa-sectored scallop domes with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). A scallop dome that has a form similar to the seashell creature is a common and suitable type of dome for covering of large spans. Compared to a spherical dome, a scallop dome has a number of sectors that each has a curvature additional to the sphere's basic curvature, and hence, a scallop dome will have ‘ridges’ and ‘grooves’, equal to its number of sectors. Based on the findings of this paper, the shape of the grooves (the transformation code 1 or 2) and their orientation with respect to the wind direction, seriously affect the wind pressure coefficient (Cp). The changes get sharper near the groove as its orientation angle approaches to 90º with respect to the wind direction, and produce positive Cp for dome code 1 and negative Cp(suction) for dome code 2. This sharp change in the wind pressure indicates that the Cp values of scallop domes differ remarkably from those of the spherical domes. Up to the present time, however, Building Codes of Practice, give the values of wind pressure coefficients only for spherical domes. This paper, proposes an equation for the hexa-sectored scallop domes of code 1, with the rise-to-span ratios (k=0.3 to 0.5). The CFD analyses are carried out with Ansys-Fluent.
